Breast Reconstruction After Breast Cancer

Breast Reconstruction After Breast Cancer

Breast Reconstruction Surgery

With the operation we call mastectomy, the breast that will damage the woman’s body due to the disease is removed. Breast reconstruction operation is performed for women who have undergone mastectomy or removal of the breasts. Performing breast removal and breast reconstruction surgery together has an important meaning in terms of the patient’s psychological health. Reconstruction after mastectomy can be performed simultaneously depending on the stage of the disease. If the disease is in its final stages, first of all, the person is expected to overcome this disease and then breast-reconstruction surgery is performed. Breast reconstruction surgery is carried out in conjunction with breast cancer treatment. It has become mandatory to inform patients about how the breast is reconstructed during the treatment process with a decision taken by the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after 2010.

How to Replace the Breast Removed by Mastectomy?

Many different methods are used to reconstruct the breast that has been removed for different reasons. The technique to be used for the restructuring of the breast is determined taking into account the patient’s health. In order to re-create the breast, two different methods are offered to you primarily. These are;

Tissue from the Body of the Person (Autologous)

Skin and tissues taken from the abdominal region are generally used to reconstruct the breast. In this method, which is suitable for patients with sagging abdomen, fat and skin tissues taken from the abdomen are shaped after microsurgery and transplantation to the breast area is performed. As a result of the tissues taken from the abdomen, our patient gets rid of excesses in the abdominal region and breast is reconstructed this way. During this procedure, our patient undergoes abdominoplasty surgery and breast reconstruction surgery together.

Breast Implant

In order to perform a breast implant surgery, it is necessary to leave enough breast tissue during the mastectomy operation. The breast implant operation is performed after determining the appropriate breast implants dimensions suitable for our patient.

Other techniques that can be applied to reconstruct the breast are as follows;

  • Skin and muscle tissue taken from the back region (Latissimus Dorsi Muscle Flap)
  • Using tissue expander and breast prostheses
  • Reconstruction of the breast by the fat injection
  • From the muscle and skin tissue taken from the hip area
  • Without need for microsurgery, the fat and the skin removed from the abdomen are used to reconstruct the breasts with the TRAM Flap technique.

In order not to risk the psychological health of our patients who undergone a breast removal operation due to illness or various reasons, the breast must be reconstructed. You can learn more about the breast reconstruction surgery after breast cancer via our contact number +90 543 456 36 93.

Pregnancy and Breast Aesthetic Surgeries

Pregnancy and Breast Aesthetic Surgeries

We receive a lot of questions about pregnancy after breast aesthetic surgeries. In this article, we will talk about pregnancy after breast aesthetics. Within the scope of breast aesthetics, there are surgical interventions for breast augmentation aesthetics, breast reduction aesthetics, breast lifting aesthetics and breast anomalies. Let’s consider these surgeries and pregnancy process one by one.

A. Breast Augmentation Surgery and Pregnancy

Breast augmentation surgery is an aesthetic intervention for people with small breast structures to add fullness and volume to existing breast structures. During pregnancy, hormonal changes occur in the female body and some deformations occur. Surgery planning is not possible during pregnancy. However, if you want to have breast augmentation surgery, you can plan it before pregnancy. Or you can plan after the pregnancy and breastfeeding process is over.

Silicone prostheses used for breast augmentation surgery do not harm breastfeeding. During the operation, breastfeeding issue is taken into consideration therefore the milk glands are protected.

B. Breast Reduction Surgery and Pregnancy

Breast reduction surgery is the type of surgery that people with large breast structures need. If you have a breast size complaint starting from adolescence, it is appropriate to have surgery without waiting for the marriage, pregnancy, breastfeeding process. Big breasts bring health problems along with aesthetic appearance. Heavy breasts cause waist, neck, shoulders, spine problems. There is no point in waiting if there will be no pregnancy or breastfeeding in the near future. Breast reduction surgery should be planned and you should be able living in a healthy way without damaging the body.

If there is a pregnancy and breastfeeding process, these periods should be completed first. After the baby is weaned, both the existing deformity and the deformities brought by pregnancy and breastfeeding will be intervened at once.

C. Breast Lift Surgery and Pregnancy

The sagging of the breast is the most likely to occur with the effect of pregnancy and subsequent breastfeeding. If the sagging condition is advanced and disturbing, it can be done without waiting for the breastfeeding and pregnancy process by surgical intervention. If there is a marriage, pregnancy or breastfeeding plan in the near future, then it is better to wait for a while. It may be more convenient and ideal time for the breast lifting after weaning the baby.

Can Breast Aesthetics be Performed During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding?

Breast aesthetic surgeries are surgical interventions that require general anesthesia. They are not suitable for local anesthesia except in exceptional cases. Surgery is performed in deep sleep under general anesthesia. Anesthesia medications are not drugs that can be used during pregnancy or lactation. During pregnancy it may harm baby’s development, as well as during breastfeeding it may also harm the baby and his/her development via breast milk. Therefore, breast aesthetic surgeries cannot be performed during pregnancy or lactation.

Is it necessary to repeat breast aesthetics performed before pregnancy?

You may have had breast aesthetics before pregnancy and lactation. Repeating surgery after pregnancy and lactation period changes according to your breast structure. If no deformation has occurred, the operation does not need to be repeated. However, if deformed, it can be reconstructed on demand.

How long after pregnancy and breastfeeding can a breast aesthetic surgery be performed?

Planning can be done after the baby is weaned for the correction of the deformations that occur in the breast after pregnancy and lactation. The health of the mother and baby is extremely important. Surgery planning is not preferred in a situation that will affect the nutrition of the baby. If it should be stated as a period, it is appropriate to plan at 6th month and after, since the baby should be fed with breast milk for the first 6 months.

Breast Deformities and Treatments

Breast Deformities and Treatments

There are many surgical interventions within the scope of breast aesthetic surgery. So what are the breast deformities and treatments ? In this article, we will present you common breast deformities (deformations, anomalies) and treatments.

1. Small Breast

Some women have either less or no breast tissue compared to other women. It is known as small breast deformity. The main causes of small breast deformity are;

  • Genetic factors
  • Hormonal state
  • Emaciation
  • How the pituitary gland works
  • Thyroid diseases
  • Stress and / or depression

Breast augmentation with the help of silicone prostheses is the solution of small breasts problem. Fat injection to the breasts is often combined with the breast implants by Assoc.Prof.Dr.Suleyman TAS in order to achieve aesthetically pleasant results and décolleté.

2. Big Breast

If the size of the breasts is bigger than normal size it is a big breast deformity. It causes aesthetic problems as well as serious health problems. People with big breast structures usually have back – neck – shoulder pain. If left untreated, it causes many diseases including herniated disc. The main causes of big breast deformity are;

  • Genetic factors
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding period
  • Too much weight gain and / or weight loss
  • Hormonal state
  • Breast growth after use of some drugs

Big breast deformity is eliminated by the Breast reduction surgery. Assoc.Prof.Dr.Suleyman TAS utilizes Central pedicle breast reduction technique which protects maximum breast tissue, nipple sensitivity, breast glands and ensures a natural shape.

3. Saggy (Ptotic) Breast

If the breast is sagging, as the name suggests, it releases itself downwards and sags. It is not an aesthetically pleasing appearance and bothers people who have this deformity. The main causes of saggy breast deformity are;

  • Genetic factors
  • Large chest structure
  • Frequent weight gain and loss
  • Being unable to stand upright
  • Incorrect bras
  • Breastfeeding status

The solution for the sagging breast structure is breast lift (mastopexy) surgery. If there is no sufficient volume, breast lift alone is not enough. In order to provide maximum benefit, breast lift and breast implant surgery should be performed together for the empty and sagging breast structure.

4. Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia means breast enlargement in men. The reason why it is frequently seen in newborn babies is that the estrogen hormone in the mother is secreted excessively and passes from milk to baby. This situation passes in the future. The reason why it occurs during adolescence and adulthood may be hormonal again. Sometimes used protein, carbohydrate powders, and similar products may cause the formation of this deformity. The solution is to take hormonal conditions under control in the first stage and wait for them to recover. In advanced gynecomastia, it is also possible to correct it by surgical intervention.

5. Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry is one of the most common breast deformities that can be seen in women. Some asymmetries can be tolerated, while some asymmetries are large enough to require surgical intervention. The large amount of asymmetries not only cause problems in appearance, but also related to the asymmetrical load on the spine it causes skeletal system diseases and back pains. As a solution, asymmetry can be eliminated by placing a prosthesis in the small breast area.

6. Tuberous Breast

Tuberous breast is also a breast anomaly like breast asymmetry. It received this name because the breast resembles the shape of the tuber. Tuberous breasts (or tubular breasts) are a result of a congenital abnormality of the breasts which can occur in both men and women, one breast or both. During puberty breast development is stymied and the breasts fail to develop normally and fully. Tuberous breast deformity is one of the challenging procedures in Aesthetic Breast Surgery. A careful and meticulous surgery may provide a natural result without any mastopexy procedure and any extensive external scar.

7. Poland Syndrome

Poland syndrome is a disorder in which affected individuals are born with missing or underdeveloped muscles on one side of the body, resulting in abnormalities that can affect the chest, shoulder, arm, and hand. The solution can be achieved by placing a silicone prosthesis.

Before and After Gallery

Scarring After Breast Surgery

Scarring After Breast Surgery

Breast aesthetic surgeries are among the most commonly performed operations. Interventions are made according to the purpose and technique of the operation. In this article, we will be explaining you a scarring issue after breast surgery.

Breast surgeries are carried out as augmentation, reduction and lifting operations. In breast aesthetic surgeries, especially breast reduction and breast augmentation operations are surgeries performed by making incisions. So, how is the postoperative scar condition? How does it heal? What is the treatment and aftercare process? Let’s handle it one by one.

A. Scarring After Breast Augmentation Surgery

The condition of the scar varies according to the method used for breast augmentation surgery.

If the prostheses are to be placed via axillary approach, an armpit incision is made. In order to minimize the scarring appearance after the operation, the incision made under the armpit is made on the natural folds. Therefore, it is not very visible after the operation.

If the breast prostheses are to be placed from the nipples (areolar approach), a round line cut is made from the point where the brown area of the nipple and the white part of the skin meet. After the prostheses are placed, the nipple is stitched back in the same place. Since there will be scarring everywhere with an incision, there will be a scarring here as well. With the good postoperative care scars will be indistinct.

If the prostheses are to be placed under the breast (inframammarial approach), a 2 – 3 cm incision is made on the bra line under the breast. Prostheses are placed through these incisions. At the end of the surgery, the incisions are closed with great care. After necessary post- operative care, scarring will be hardly visible.

B. Scarring After Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery is a more complicated surgery compared to breast augmentation surgery. Breast reduction surgery is performed by making incisions. And excessive tissue is removed. In the inverse T technique, a vertical incision is made below the nipple downwards and a horizontal incision under the breast. In vertical technique, a vertical incision is made below the nipple downwards. As any incision causes scarring, these types of surgeries end up with scarring and require good after care.

C. Scarring After Breast Lift Surgery

For breast lift surgery similarly to the breast reduction surgery areolar incision, inverted T technique and vertical technique can be applied. There is no possibility for being a scar free in this surgery. Although breast lift surgery has started to be performed endoscopically without scar recently, this situation is not suitable for every breast structure. There is no scar in endoscopic breast lift surgery.

How Do Scars Heal?

The scars will start healing after being excised. However, it is in the hands of the patient how properly will the scars heal. You should strictly follow the instructions given by your doctor. If the person does not have a keloid condition in his body, the incision sites will heal nicely and will get a clear color. It will take 1 year for the incision sites to acquire a bright color. This process requires patience and care.

Treatment and After Care Recommendations

  • Bandages and dressings are required after breast aesthetic surgery.
  • The operated area shouldn’t contact with water until the day of the control.
  • Any movements and activities that may push your incisions and create pressure should be avoided.
  • Quality rest is required.
  • The wound-healing and scar-removing creams given by your doctor should be applied regularly and should not be disrupted.
  • The incisions should not be exposed to direct sun and should be protected from the sun.
  • You should not go to the solarium until the incision sites are completely healed.
